here are several types of debaters whom the Qur'an recognizes. There are those who debate out of ignorance, and there are those who blindly follow their ancestors or the devils from amongst the jinns and humans..{ Among mankind is he who disputeth concerning Allah without knowledge, and followeth each froward devil}. There are certain debaters who hold themselves arrogantly over others..{ Lo! those who wrangle concerning the revelations of Allah without a warrant having come unto them, there is naught else in their breasts save pride ..}. Finally there are those who take up ! debate for a sacred aim, and that is to call people to the path of Almighty God and to guide society.. { Call unto the way of thy Lord with wisdom and fair exhortation, and reason with them in the better way}

The first rule of constructive dialogue is that one be specialized in the area of discussion. It is truly unfortunate that in the time that sees great respect for those who have achieved expertise in medicine, engineering, and other fields, but on the other hand we see that so many people are ready to give their opinion in issues of religion without any clear authority! We sometimes see journalists talking about Sacred Law, or people who don't know Arabic or understand the basic meanings of the words expressed in the religion speaking in the name of the Qur'an and the Prophet (S). At the same time we see the religious scholars who have struggled many long years to understand what the Prophet and His Holy Family (S) have expressed, and have distinguished their statements into their v! arious categories of reliability, lest we fall into opinions that do not bring us closer to the truth.

One of the most basic rules of dialogue is the avoidance of self-centeredness and love for intellectual victory over opponents. This is one of the hardest challenges for the soul, because the debater who does not uproot his ego loves to distinguish himself by his strength and power during the dialogue, leading up to his victory in it, even if it were at the cost of the very truth that was supposed to be reached in the first place! It has been said that the last thing that would leave the hearts of the Truthful would be the love of distinction! The ideal debater is the one who admits defeat before his opponent when he realizes the strength of his arguments before he stands in the great court of the Lord of the Worlds
